    Snapped shift linkage

Just wondering if anyone has had this happen before, I was runnin the car pretty hard through the gears and snapped the shfit lever holder right in half, I'll get a pic once I get the digi battery charged, the image is for reference only it is not an IE shifter I broke just lifted the image, mine was stock, I have a parts car and was wondering if this is the type of injury that requires dropping the tranny to fix, and if so on the ix would I have to drop the t-case,
I can't believe I snapped it right in half where I put the black arrow, how hard is this to fix how many hours did I get myself into?
thanks if there is a write up DYI for this let me know the location, thanks.

I went through first and seoond on running it up to 5k in each and threw it in to third and then , it was just loose as hell and I did not hear a snap or anything, didn't even have the radio on.
the gears were getting sloppy already as the car has 245k and was planning on doing the z4 swap have the shifter already, so I guess this weekend is the one to do it in.
So both the t-case and the tranny need to be dropped with the exhaust right?

When I had the driveshaft out I change the back mounts but the front looked kinda tight in there if I recall.

You sure its that part that broke and not just the linkage itself? My original broke.
            Im now E30less.

Its very soft cast aluminum, very easy to break.... Its not all that uncommon if you shift hard.

You cannot weld it, as the aluminum is so soft it will just vaporize. You need a new/used shifter carrier.

yeah I have one in my parts ix now is it worth getting in to get it out or just buy another, how much is a steel one can I fab one?
I wanted to sell my 5-spd out of my parts car and the t-case anyways so is this a good excuse to take them out?

i did that in my corrado once... selector came off in my hand... pin in the pivot sheared off.. totally different shifter than the e30 one.. but still sucked since i was 200 miles from home

DAMN. I broke my selector rod once, but that was partially due to it grinding on the harmonic balancer ring on the drive shaft.

This might be a good excuse to buy one of the short shifters available that come with the shift carrier. Expensive though.

lol. Eurospeed and I had a similar experiance the other day. We were pulling the tranny out of a parts car and snapped it right at the tranny. Broke just like yours. Pretty loud too.

I actually drove around like this for 10 miles you just have to hunt for the gears and hold the clutch in and slowly let the clutch out to see if it grabs, I moved the selector back half up thru the hole in the floor and can hit all the gears.
