shop (labor) hours for engine swap

i cracked my oil pan on a speed bump, big surprise...going to swap in another lowly m42. how many hours can i expect this swap to take in a shop, realistically? i have been told 10-11 from some people and 18-20 from others. i dont want to get ripped off completely. anybody in the providence RI/Mass. area have any suggestions for me? bimmerfanatik? thanks guys

did you do any damage to the motor? The lower pan on the 318is is an hour job...

Must have, unless this is just an excuse to get a fresh motor in there. I can't blame a guy for that.

I would've guessed 12 to 14 hours myself, but I've never done a swap out on an m42. But 16 sounds pretty fair to me.

I pulled an m42 out of a 91 318is last year at school. Had three other huys with me helping. Took us three hours to get it out. A good tech should have that motor out in no more than five hours, so a ten hour time frame sounds about reasonable.

no more than 10 taking your time. Especially if this is a shop that has worked on BMW's in the past.

so the engine is damaged then?
you mustve hit the engine pretty bad to be needing a new one and if the damage is that severe you should be needing a new steering rack/knuckle subframe...

THAT or u mustve hit the pan kept driving leaked out all the oil and seized up the motor

                good luck either way

Yeah, ripping out an M42 is pretty easy. It's shorter than an M20 so it's even easier to take it out.
