    Car is hesitating/misfiring...

When I first purchased the car there was a strange hesitation whenever I would apply 3/4's or more throttle in any gear under any load. I thought it was due to the catalyst and mufflers being clogged. On went a new header back exhaust. Now that the new exhaust is on you can hear what sounds like the engine misfiring during 3/4 or more throttle application. I thought it was the fuel system somewhere. Checked the fuel pressure regulator, no leaks, fuel pump seems ok too. I removed the spark plugs and found excess gasoline on the spark plugs. I cleaned them off. They are new plugs. What could be causing my missfire?

Sounds like a bad plug wire.

EDIT: Do the 4 bangers have plug wires or is it coil-on-plug?

try your dizzy cap and rotor (im not sure what system the m42 uses but it should be similar to m20 motronic).....i had a similar prob.....really bad idle hunting, and random hesistations or what felt like misfiring around 2k Rpm under no load...just got a new dizzy cap and rotor yesterday..seems to have fixed the prob

Im used to Honda engines, I didn't even know the M42 used a distributor cap since it's not connected to the camshaft. I thought it was a distributorless ignition system.

Since I'm going with a turbo setup, are there any upgrades like the MSD boxes that could work on this engine?
