    Chips and fault codes

anyone know if aftermarket chips (dinan, etc) affect fault code readouts?

my 325i is suffering from intermittent fuel starvation. i've replaced all the tune-up parts, checked the fuel pump for psi (80) and flow (46oz in 30 secs), so that looks ok.

the fault code i'm getting is 1231, which is low battery voltage/DME main relay. i put in a new main relay and fuel pump relay, and i'm getting the same fault code. the dinan chip is the only mod to the car.

    any ideas?

no, they don't. could be your fuel pressure regulator, check the vacume line to it could be cracked and dropping psi every now and then.

Check all your wiring connections and grounds for corrosion.

          conclusion - so far - i hope!

Well, the car started acting up on my way home. wouldn't rev past 2k, would idle ok but that's it. in the past, it would "clear" itself after a few minutes, or sitting overnite.

i pulled over to the side of the road, lifted the hood, and tapped on the pressure regulator pretty hard, which did nothing. the PR is one thing i hadn't checked before. prior to this i had checked everything i could at home, fuel pump amps (4), cleanliness of the fuel tank (clean), vacuum leaks with starter fluid (none). my ecu was reading a fault code of 1231 (main relay, which i replaced along with the fuel pump relay).

as the car was idling, i reved it manually, the car continued to run like crap, and then bumped the ICV connector, which did nothing, and then the AFM connector, which made the car rev and then act normally from that point on. success! i had disconnected these before when the car was off, but not during the time it was acting up.

i got home, cleaned every connector i could find with spray electrical contact cleaner, ckecked the DME harness connector for looseness, reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery neg terminal and tapping the brakes to eliminate any stored energy, and viola! car runs like a champ.

before, the car had a hesitation at 4800rpm and 5300 rpm, and now just runs straight to 6900rpm (dinan chip). fault code is 1444 (normal) and for the past 3 days i haven't been able to get the car to act like it did before.

anyways, hope this helps someone somewhere. this has been a frustrating experience for the last 2 months.
