Weird Idle

    Weird Idle

    Well in body class today I replaced a disintegrated rectangular gasket (connecting this metal piece with two hose tubes to the throttle body) in my 89 325i. I Took off all the hoses in the area and intake tube after the filter.

    I dont know much about working about cars so bear with me please.

    Anyways i got the gasket with a good seal (sp?) and its great. No more coolant leaks. But now when i turn on the car when its cold, the car revs up too about 2K rpm and slowly goes down to normal around 750 or so. After it settles down it jumps up and down between 650 to 800 i would say (for frame of reference.) What is the problem, and what can i do? thanks mates.

    idle control valve, it sits right above the gasket you just replaced

        Sounds like an intake leak or sticking ICV. Since you were working in the area of the intake I'd suspect a cracked or loose hose or that you forgot to reconnect the ICV.
        The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

          Thanks guys. I checked around for leaks and well when i was unscrewing the throttle body i must of ripped the larger, thinner gasket. Only half of it is on. Can this be leak problem?

            vac leak. Should get it replaced asap. Its allowing air into the cumbustion chamber that is unfiltered. anything that can fit through that crack, can end up in your engine.

                Yes, your half of a gasket is causing a vacuum leak. You are speaking of the gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold correct?

                    replaced it. the BMW dealership just gave me a paper gasket. :D Check engine light still goes on though when im idling. Perhaps i didnt tighten the throttle body enough.

                      Make sure you have all the hoses and plugs reconnected properly.

                      Is your idle normal now?

                        yeah, around 750. I connected everything, but perhaps not tight enough.

                        I kinda just figured out, at the beginning of the intake, the tube is ripped and the plastic cone is just sitting around in the engine compartment not connected to anything! Well this happened long before me changing gaskets a day ago, but I wonder how much ive been losing because of this.
