(this is a friend's car)
I have a 1991 325i and it died on me last night. I believe the alternator went bad and drained the battery. The ABS light and then check engine light came on. The interior lights and headlights were all very dim and the windows moved slowly. Then the engine just stopped running. I had had that happen a month or two ago on a long trip and had to get it fixed at a Pepboys - who after charging me a lot for stuff that didn't need to be done (and not listening to me me telling them what was wrong) put in a new alternator and battery which were trouble free until now. I was able to get the car home tonight (about a 1 mile drive) by putting a spare battery in it.
I'm wondering what I should do now. I looked through some of the pep boys stuff and they thought they were fixing a 91 318i, are the alternators for an m42 and an m20 different? Would this matter? If its not related to pep boys screwing up, do I just have to bite the bullet and buy another alternator? Anything else this might be? Thanks for the help.
