    Single pipe 3" exhaust

I searched and couldn't find a real answer on this.. Would having a single pipe exhaust from cat back or manifold(s) back hinder performance on "i" motors? Reason I ask is because I want to get a custom 3" exhaust put on becuase I hate the sound on the system the PO put on (too quiet) and I plan on getting a turbo down the road.

Would a single 3" pipe be too constricting? Also anyone have thoughts on a low profile single in-single out muffler?

Ask the ricers where they buy their 1inch in, 8inch out fart cans, that is exactly what you want.

lol, I said "low profile"... I'd want just the plain 3" pipe sticking out the rear if it didn't look like ass and sound like I was driving a U-Haul..

Crap, I've got a 2.5" and it's way too loud for a NA motor. Thats why I have to quiet it down with a turbo in a couple of months.

volume is more a function of the mufflers/cats/resonators than it is piping diameter

            I can't comment on the Performance gains/losses as I don't have a M20.

            But I do have a 3" zorst on a E30.
I have 2 mufflers, 1st is a flowmaster low profile muffler which is located just in front of the fuel tank, the 2nd is in the stock hanger out back.

Be prepared for some scrapage where the exhaust goes under the rear subframe if you have lowered the car.

What he said. I have a 3" pipe w/ two mufflers inline and I scrape like a mofo if I don't go sideways over most bumps. That said, I'd run 2.5" on a stock M20. I have stock looking tips, btw.

I guess what my previous post was trying to say is don't use a 2.5" pipe with a flowmaster muffler on a 318is.

What mufflers would you recommend for a nice mellow tone but still offer perfomance gains?

mufflers and (noticable) performance gains shouldnt go in the same sentence on (stock) M20 powered cars.

with that in mind, my Brullen has an awesome sound...ive gotton several offers for it

Supersprint is too mellow but still gives a supposed gain.

Magnaflow is a lil loud but you get some gains that make it worthy. I rode in Tiato's car with a chip, intake & magnaflow and its def a trio for OOMPH +

                        IMO, 3" is wayyyy overkill.

I totally disagree. What are you basing this on?

The exhaust I have is a custom chop job that I am very unhappy with. I got it from Midas as opposed to my usual shop. The only reason I went to Midas is because the tow truck dude brought me there. My cat was clogged and I was shooting fireballs from my tailpipe when my exhaust heated up. II looked under the car after I saw the fireballs and my exhaust was so red hot it looked like I had neons under there. But anyways I digress...

I've got some random 2.5 wide catalytic converter, about a 2 foot long 2.5" wide cherry bomb to sort of presilence the exhaust, and I've got a 2.5" wide flowmaster muffler. It sounds like ass at higher RPM but it sounds way too droning and intrusive at every other RPM. I have to push in my clutch to quiet the damn thing if I see cops.
