WELL fellas update on my suddenly KAPUT problem: ill get you caught up to date . Several times i could be driving along and for no reason and without similar situations the car would stop while driving and would not restart for several hours. Just like clockwork if it stopped on me it was guaranteed to start again after an hour or so of sitting. This lead me to believe it was a fuel issue so i replaced the relay, but after several more episodes i knew it had to be more.
I took my car off the road before christmas so that i could have some time to figure the problem(s) out and have her back on the road in january. I purchased a WALBRO inline and a different crank
position sensor. Since last weekend was very chilly here i held off until today to get my ride fixed and road worthy for monday. The walbro was very easy to install and much needed since the old pump was most definitely original from 5/87 my cars build date.
Naturally i did the most time consuming job first the fuel pump ,
then went to the easiest . As i loosened the CPS from its bracket i noticed that there was 2 wires exposed as the cord went into the actual sensor. I took the cps inside to show my wife and as i got it inside one of the wires broke in my hand, most definitely the guilty culprit of my recent bimmer blues. I replaced the cps and automatically noticed the difference, although the old cps was still functioning it was faulty at the same time. I guess i really didn't need the fuel pump yet i'm sure it wouldn't have been too long before it was faulty as well. I know that our cars are a few years old but i guess its all good in the end when you can diagnose a problem think it through and correct that problem yourself and feel very accomplished in the end knowing we own drive and repair one of the best automobiles in the world . LONG LIVE THE MIGHTY E30!!!!

Glad you got it fixed. At elast now you know your fuel pump wont fail for a long time.

yes but better than my old one, it had wires exposed, however i also replaced the coil too. In retrospect i think it may have been my coil all along , it runs better now!

I am having the same issue. Don't etas have flywheel position sensors instead of crank position sensors? I havent been under my eta in a while but do they have both?

Edit: yes guys I know this is an old thread
