A/C Removed, Now Tach Doesn't Work

Trying to decipher if this is a freak coincidence or if I may have cut/altered the wrong thing. I removed the A/C from the car today - condenser, compressor, dryer and two lines going to the firewall. I also removed the washer fluid bottle, motor and all wiring. I shrinkwrapped every wire to ensure that nothing would short and then electrical taped everything back together.

Get in the car for a drive, and the tach and instant mpg gauges don't work. Speedo works fine. My question is: is it possible that I cut the wrong wire today? There's nothing with the A/C that I can imagine would affect the tach signal, but I'm open to suggestions.

Otherwise I'll just head to the junkyard and get a new cluster to try.

Agreed. Nothing you'd have been messing with has anything to do with the Tach. With both the Tach & MPG gauge inop, my first suspicion would be a failed SI board or SI board batteries.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Cool, thanks. I figured as much. Picked up another cluster for 15 bucks at the local u-pull-it. Hopefully the tach works, though it's tempting to go 100% aftermarket and just have a tach, coolant temp, fuel level and maybe oil temp/pressure gauges.

I pulled the compressor, condenser, dryer, washer fluid bottle, pump and all associated wiring. A few wires went into a larger harness that passes in front of the radiator and contains the electrical for the turn signal lights and fog lights. I didn't want to undo and re-wrap the entire harness to chase the four or five wires all the way through, so I cut 'em at the harness, shrink wrapped the ends and taped everything together. The end result looks OEM, and there's no opportunity for open ends to short.
