    fan clutch

the last time i had a fan clutch problem it was with my 1991 325ic. now i got it with my 325/e whining and chattering it really kills the car's engine sound. anyone know how to avoid $95+ for a new fan clutch? these fan clutches have silicone in them dont they?

had the same problem, but my fan clutch is still in good working order. i had a fan blade snap off because i got this cheap radiator put in years ago. the missing blade caused the fan/fan clutch to be off balance and made the chatter noise. replaced the fan blade and trimmed all the blades slightly, and it fixed the chattering noise. my suggestion would be, take off the clutch, make sure the fan is on there properly. as in all 4 bolts are tight that hold it to the clutch, make sure the clutch is properly installed on the fan (no gaps around the bolting points- evenly on the clutch).

EDIT: if your fan clutch doesnt have the gummy feel when the engines cold and you try to spin it, then youll have to replace it.

i just went and looked at it today and there seems to be plenty of space between the fan blades and the radiator. im almost positive that the fan clutch is gone though..... heres a video of the sound:

Not from over here. Take off the fan clutch and run the engine. 5 minutes and you'll have your answer.
