    Alternator belt not lasting

I don't know what is up. I constantly have to tighten my alternator belt every couple of days otherwise I get a horrid screeching noise until about 25mph. And my belt only lasts me about a week or so. I can freely spin my waterpump pulley and my alternator pulley. What is wrong?

the teeth might be worn out on the mounting bracket. Try tightening the pivot bolts next time you adjust the alternator.

bracket may be bent..... if it isnt square then the belt will wear out really fast

Last time I had to tighten the belt the pivot bolt was tight. I will try to tighten the belt then the pivot bolt and see if that holds.

probally the teeth are shot, I had the same exact problem the new bracket was only around $8-$10 at the dealer.

I had this problem afte I replaced my alternator. I replaced the toothed bracket. Then tried to align it better. Replaced my fan pulley, then finally replaced my alternator pulley. Now the problem is gone.

            Sold it.

Tightened belt and pivot bolt we will have to see how long that lasts.

You probably have bad alternator bushings, I have had the same problem on a couple alternators, the whole thing bends in, and won't keep tension.

My fix was new lower bushings, and I bought some larger washers that pretty much cover the whole bushing and rest on the housing, this way it won't allow any flex. Worked great for me, I can tighten the belt and the alternator doesnt wiggle all over the damn place anymore.

Forget about that stupid tooth and wheel thing, just grap the alternator with one hand, pull back hard, and tighten one of the nuts. This way you'll get the most tension.

                  I used a broom stick.

The alternator I got (91) seemes to have solid busings.

                  Sold it.

Tightened the belt and pivot bolt on June 12th. The damn belt is loose again and making that horrid screeching noise. I even tightened it last night.

Have you applied any of the above suggestions?
You want someone to fix it for you?

I have tried tightening the pivot bolt and there are no alternator bushings. I was just keeping it updated I wasn't asking someone to fix it for me.

last time I replaced my alternator, I turned the bolt the wrong direction. A new alternator tensioning bracket and bolt is about $11 total from the dealer. I had the same embarrassing situation.

My alternator belt is giving me problems. I think the bracket is bad, it can wobble real easily. My friend sayed when I hit the gas somewhat it pivots. I'm going to have this check out along w/ my timing belt tm, wouldnt want to ruin either with my new chip ;)
Jordan, when he has nothing bad to say, he says nothing at all. Cuz he's way better than us, right?

If it pivots than maybe the pivot bolt underneath the alternator might not be tight enough.
