    n2 in a tire

Saw something on using nitrogen instead of regualr air to lighten up the wheels and tires, anyone say way this would not be practical? Will nitrogen ignite like this?

they have been doing that here in germany for a few years now. suppposedly it makes road noise a lot less noticable, and gives you better gas milage. I havent tried it though, seems like a scam to me(not worth the money)

How much do they charge you guys? I can run out to the airport and fill 'em up for free. :)

        That's bogus.

Air is already composed of about 80% N2 anyway.

Let's say you have 100L of air at STP.

        78L will be N2 or 78/22.4=3.48mol N2 * 28 g/mol= 97.5g N2
        21L will be O2 or 21/22.4=0.938mol O2 * 32 g/mol= 30g O2
The rest are trace amounts (<1%).

So 100L of normail "Air" will have a mass of about 127.5g at STP.

If you used 100% N2, then the mass would be 100/22.4 =4.46*28= 125g

        a 2% weight savings. Yay.

People payhow much for this stuff?

if I could get some for free I would try it, but the other guy is right normal air is mostly nitrogen anyway.

n2 is not used to lighten the wheel. i doubt you will gain any kind of performance, handling or acceleration wise. they use n2 in formula1, and other race series, simply because it doesnt expand near as much as temp goes up, therefore more consistant tire pressure. so it's basically useless on a road car unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket

mattm20 is correct, consistancy is the purpose, not weight savings
