i fuckin hate electrical problems... help!! long...

so a while ago i got new H4's with city lights and i installed them, i did a hack job on the city lights cuz i was in a rush, but it worked....
for a while... about a week or two ago, im sitting in my car in front of my friends house and i see smoke coming out of the vents and the dash seal, smells terrible. nothing from under the hood... it eventually stops, but later that night i find out all my dash and intstrument panel lights are out, and my city lights no longer worked, and my tail lights were out. i figured fuses....
so i go to change them and realize that stupid me had put 30 amp fuses where there should be 7.5 and i probably fried something... so i go to change the fuse to the new, correct ones, and they break as soon as i put them in. fuck...
so today i re-did the citylights they way they should have been done in the first place (btw... i tapped them into the front sidemarkers), and i replace all the fuses. Everything works correctly, except one fuckin thing... as soon as I shut everything off (shut off all lights with headlight switch) and shut off the car, the left city light, left parking light, left front sidemarker, and left tail light all stay on, but not the left rear sidemarker, that works fine. Everything else is good, the dash/instrument lights, and all the lights on the right side of the car. just in case it matters, i also previously did the independent fog light mod before the H4's in case that matters in fixing the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Could you draw a diagram of how you "taped" the side markers, how are the city lights grounded ? are the sidemarkers independnt in the head light switch or a common feed to all

i just sliced into them directly... the power to the sidemarker splices to the power to the city light, the ground to the sidemarker splices to the city light as well. the sidemarkers are controlled by the headlight switch, so they shut off (should) when the headlight switch is off. Like I said before... i didnt change anything from the time i did the hackjob... all the same process, except taking more time and being more careful. but it worked perfectly when i did the hackjob, and now its the same but something is acting funny. beats the shit outta me. someone please help!

Why did you do a rush job? Now you have to track down this issue or deal with having no lights in your cluster.

Pull out your Bentley and Multimeter and start ohming out the lines in the circuit.

i have the dash lights and everything works fine...

until i shut off the lights completely... then all the lights on the left side of my car stay on except the rear sidemarker. the right side is fine. i dont even know where to start looking, so i pulled the fuse for the left side lights so they dont stay on 24/7. any ideas?

Cross short, wire is gaining power from a constant. So get out the multi and start chasing em.

Wiring systems are a tad more complex than that (even on E30's) its not like someone can just tell you exactly what to to fix... maybe you would be best off leaving this to someone who knows what theyre doing?

of course its complex... but id rather spend days and learn how to do it myself than let someone else do it.

Then read up on electrical troubleshooting, get some ETM's, and have at it.
