    Im not sure

How many Fuel Pumps are there in my 325/e? i cant seem to find out. im thinking that a faulty fuel pump is the source to my hard starts/ bad idle.
How can i find out if i have a bad oxygen sensor?

    thanks

If it's a '87 it should have two. A transfer pump in the tank and the main one under the car.
If the transfer pump is bad, you won't likely know it unless you starve for fuel during hard cornering (right handers) with under a half tank.
If the main pump is bad, they are usually BAD. As in, dead.
I would sooner expect it to be something in the engine bay. Idle control valve, air flow meter, torn intake boot, broken vacuum line or perhaps even electrical.
O2 sensors aren't that expensive. If you haven't put one in that you can remember, it's probably time for a new one. The old cars pretty much had those as a maintenance item. Mine has a faulty sensor but it sets off the check engine light.

I have a strong odor of gas coming out the exhaust, can that mean that my oxygen sensor is gone?

Possibly. O2 sensor defaults to rich mixture when not working. Are you sure it's plugged in? Sometimes they just come unplugged.
