for the sake of a long story what happens when a coil starts to go bad???

In most cases when a coil starts to go out it fails completely and you get no spark. If you have a degraded condition or an intermittent problem the cause is probably other than the coil. If you'll provide some details we'll try to help with the diagnosis.
