    heater only working on 4?

so a few weeks ago i was driving from Beaverton to Vancouver (30 min drive) and had the heater on 3 and the full "red" hot setting. and the heat was only comeing through the front vents on the dash by the stereo and cluster.

on my way back the center console starts to smoke, so i turned everything off, temp controller to cold and even stereo off. i guess i had the heater on high for too long and it starts to melt the wiring in the back?

now i dont get anything out of 1-2-3. but i have to have it on 4 to get anything to come out of the vents. even with it all the way red/hot, it is barely warm...

anyone run into this problem? im guessing it might the wiring might have gotten burnt and now causing the controls to malfunction? dunno. any help would be great guys, this winter sucks in the pnw..

Speeds 1, 2 and 3 are not working because the resistor pack for the blower motor is funked.

Search "resistor pack" or "blower motor" and you will find a bunch of threads on how to fix/replace it.

The smokey smell and lack of heat could be related to something else.

Just like craig said. The blower motor resister has failed. The reason it works in position 4 is because there is no resistance and allows the blower motor to run wide open with the 14v from the alternator/battery.

You dont have to HAVE to buy a new one.
You can take the old one out and blow/clean off the carbon that built up on it and put it back in and you should be good to go. hope this helps

          thanks guys.
i just pulled the covers off... and it took a while. stupid m50
barely any room to get the metal/foam cover off.
and i had to break the cover that goes around the blower to get that out!!
now i dont thing there is gonna be any room to pull the assembly out!
might have to pull the intake manifold...:(
have to wait for the weekend or tough it out til school is over...
