    Problems with Fuse 17!

    Hey Guys,

Okay for the past couple of days I've been having a problem with Fuse 17 repeatedly blowing. I've tried cleaning the contact points around it's location and checking for anything else abnormal in the circuitry but can't seem to diagnose the problem.

Basically, the electric windows and sunroof randomly work and then randomly stop working and when I check the fuse it is not surprisingly blown. I've never had this problem before and so far I've replaced the fuse twice (first time as it was blown and second time to see if the problem would persist) and now it has come back again.

If anyone could offer me some advice in fixing this problem I would be most appreciative as at this stage I am stuck with what would be my best bet next.

    Cheers, Pete

You have a loose contact or a broken wire somewhere. Do you have a Bentley manual? That will have the wiring diagrams so you know which wires to look at. I bet it is a wire with broken plastic coating that is shorting out. Something simple to do would be to take out your center console and look at the wires from the switches, untill you can not see them anymore. They could have been cut from someone putting the console on a wire, and now it could be shorting on the body.

Pete, your electrical manual is here: http://www.wedophones.com/Manuals/BM...g%20Manual.pdf

The index shows "windows" as section 5133-0. However, the pages jump from 3450 to 5200. I cannot find any info on fuse 17 anywhere!

Looking at the diagram for an '89 E30, the bits and pieces are laid out in great detail.

I think the best diagnostic question I can offer is does the fuse blow while in use, or just driving?

        Hey Guys,

Thanks for the advice... I will pull the console and check all of the contacts. It seems to blow while driving so yeah it would make sense for it to be shorting somewhere on the body or with another wire or whatever so yeah, I'll definitely check that out.

Okay well I pulled the console apart and inspected the sunroof switch and its surroundings as well. Cleaned all of the contacts, reinstalled them and it still seems to blow the fuse. Does anyone think I could have a short in either one of the sunroof or left or right electric window motors? I wouldn't have thought the wire would somehow be spliced open and be shorting somewhere along the loom and as the ends of it seem clean I can't quite put it down to anything else but the motors?

          Thanks heaps guys! Pete

if you had a buddy standing watching your fuse panel you could operate the individual switches until it blows. when it does blow you've atleast isolated it to an individual motor/circuit. if it is your door window motors i bet the opening and closing of the said door has caused the wires to short.
