    Clutch gone?

Well here is the story. When i bought the car about 20k miles ago there was about a new clutch with 5-10K miles installed.

So tonight i was pulling out of the driveway about to leave the house when my room mate told me to stop so he can get some thing from the house. So after he gets out, i rev the car to about 6K rpm, with a warm engine, and then coast to park the car and shut off the car. No problems what so ever till now.

After some rough housing, I let my room mate take the wheel because he really wanted to drive a stick again. Well, i told him to get a feel for the gears because with my new z3 2.8 short shift lever in, i wanted him to know how to properly shift the gears.

After that he starts the car, and supposedly puts it into reverse, the car goes forward and onto the curb. He tries a couple more times to put the car into reverse. I tell him to get out and let me drive.

SO what happens is I can't get into reverse. It just won't let me. And second, while im in the neutral position I, the lever has so much play it just does a huge circle where usually I should be putting the lever into gear. So i can put it into the second gear position, while in neutral. Getting into gear its just, really hard.

My question is, perhaps, with your guys' best guessing powers how this could of happened and is the clutch kaputz? Thanks.

The clutch and shift lever are not really related. How long ago did you install the new shifter? It almost sounds like the pivot ball came out of the retainer bushing. I had that happen once. I lost 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Pull up the boot and check that the lever is fully engaged in the retainer bushing.

I did that last night and it seemed like it was. Then again, i dont know exactly how far it should be in the bushing in the first place. Im going to go check again, its just cold as hell outside.

Work the shifter while the boot is pulled up. Watch the bushing and the console for excessive movement. If the bushing is OK, maybe the shift console broke at the forward mount point.

Just tested it out and i really can't pull the lever up and it seems to be pretty snug in the housing. Not knowing too much else about this and having work really really soon, im going to have a friend come on over. Thanks for trying to help.
