Whats the pot on the speedo for?

Anyone? I'm looking at the motometer specifically but i think i saw one on the VDO too.
    is it for speed tweaking?
has anyone ever messed around with it before?

Search E30 speedometer repairs. There is a thread with pictures. I calibrated mine and it is now accurate. It was 10 MPH fast at 70.

Here is a tip. Carefully measure and drill a hole in cluster housing directly over pot for tweaking tool. Connect instrument panel but leave loose. Pot can be tweaked while driving. Important; keep your eyes on the road. Good luck!

i was thinking of doing that but wanted to try my hand at sourcing a wave generator. if i were still in college, i'd have no problem.

Here is a quick circuit i dug up, square wave generator for the breadboard. adjustable signal, adjustable duty, and 0-12v too. three chips and about 20 components.

I got lucky on the adjustment.
I figured the pot could use a scrub so I noted where it was set, tweaked it back and forth a few times and set it right back where it was.
Got my neighbor to take his e46 out and matched speeds finding out it its back to where it should be..... or... his is off too :)
