What to do with upper/lower ball cups ?

I bought all the parts needed for a shifter rebuild, along with a z3 1.9 shift lever. What am I supposed to do exactly to the plastic (white) upper/lower ball cups ? I thought I was suppose to only file 2nd lower ball cup to make it fit (one upper + two lower), am I supposed to make the inner-diameter bigger too ?

You want to file down the inside of the upper cup enough that it will just slide over the top of the lever. Leave the lower cups how they are and just stack them on top of eachother. This will of course mean that you can't use the spring or that little metal cup on top of it. You'll need to sand down the top of the upper cup enough so that you can just get the circlip in above the upper cup. So essentially in the cylinder you'll have: lower cup, lower cup, lever, upper cup (sanded down), circlip.

Is the lock ring the circlip on the top?

Sorry 23411466112 is the lock ring . I meant the #8 Spacer Sleeve, it was mentioned in the shifter rebuild thread.

Sorry, it's been a long time since I installed mine in the old 84. Bascially you can use whatever combo of the pieces you want as long as it misses the driveshaft and is tight in the cylinder. You just need to use two lower cups to space the bottom of the lever up. IIRC, I just used two lower cups, then an upper cup and then just the circlip.

Thanks! Do you remember which way should the shift lever be installed/oriented on the shift rod ?

Bend should go toward the rear, IIRC. I left my Z4 3.0 straight though.
