    Hi-R3v'in

    I own a 1991 318is thats pretty much stock for the time being. Before I go through and complete my turbo kit there were a few things that concerned me about the motor. Whenever I r3v it to 5500 rpm or more it makes a high frequency scraping noise that I can feel through the gas pedal. What the hell is that? I noticed it today when I was sliding around in some gravel pretending to be Petter Solberg. After I stopped the car I also noticed the engine was smoking. What is the grinding/scraping noise I am hearing?

    You do wait for your engine to be up to temp (and I don't mean the coolant needle to be up to temp) before you do this, right?


    What color smoke is coming from the engine? Do you have any residue on your muffler?

      Sinc3 you notic3d smok3, that would sugg3st that you ar3 l3aking fluids. I would tak3 a good look at your 3ngin3 and try to find any l3aks. P3rhaps it is r3lated to your "high fr3qu3ncy grinding" nois3.

        My engine was plenty up to temperature by the time I starting whipping around in the gravel. I had been driving around for at least a half an hour before that. The smoke was a blueish smoke that was coming from the rear of the engine towards the firewall. I couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from but it couldnt be my valve cover gasket I just replaced mine. Could it be a smoking clutch? I let the engine cool a little bit before I left and it stopped smoking after a few minutes of just sitting there with the engine off.

          The noise could be the timing chain rattling up against the plastic guides. If the timing chain tensioner hasn't been changed, it might be worth replacing it. If it is timing chain related, it may help take some of the slack out. As for the smoke, I would be suscipcious of the valve cover gasket. Maybe it wasn't seated correctly when you replaced it and maybe little oil oozed out (maybe from the top) during your trip across the gravel.

                  But wait a second. I just got a leakdown and compression test last week and everything turned out alright.
