    Cleaning Grime Off A Differential?

What is the best way to clean grime off of a differential?

It's sealed, with the exception of the vent, of course.

I'm thinkin' spray it with engine degreaser and leave it to sit for a while, then wipe it clean with rags -- then repeat.

Anyone got a better idea? Can the vent be plugged, and then the whole diff hosed off?

Just put a rubber cap on the vent or something, and spray it down with engine degreaser, then hose it off. You'll probably want to plug the speedometer pickup plug with something, too.

Thanks for the reply, Matt --- think that'll get it squeaky-clean?

When I replaced my mounting bushing, I removed the entire cover and cleaned it. I scrubbed it down using Castrol Super Clean and a bristle brush. I guess you could do the same thing without removing the cover, but it won't be as thorough.
        Here's how mine turned out.

                Very nice - I like it 8)

This is actually not for my E30 --- I'm stepping up the diff on my E36. I actually need to clean the entire diff, not just the diff cover.

                Thanks for the help!!

Do not clean aluminum with Castrol Super Clean. It will eat the aluminum and make it oxidize with white powder to no end.
