Ghetto Question of the day...Tree Huggers, need not apply...

    Letsayyyyyyy...

I wanted the toss in some delicious R-12 in my wonderfly functionning r-12 a/c system on my 85 ETA...
Is it absolutely needed to 'vent' the system, as in go to a HVAC tech, and "empty" the system before I toss in some RedTek R-12?

    or...

can I just evacuate the system as much as possible, and toss in a new batch?

You will want to take it out under vac and use a dryer to remove any moisture/condinsate. Otherwise your "re-charge" will not perform as well. Also I'd suggest a new receiver dryer as well. (kinda like the freon filter)

        thats what I feared...

Sean, it's not "real" R-12, as in a CFC based application...

I don't know if that particular R12 substitute is compatible with any R12 left in the system (ask the manufacturer). But the safe bet would be to have the existing R12 recovered and recharge with the substitute.
