Newb question: Fuel Filter Location

Need to check the fuel filter... difficult to do without finding it though. Anyone know where it is???? (new 91 318is owner). Thanks for helpin out a poor newb.

It should be under the car on the drivers side before the rear wheel but I don't know for sure on the 318is

Its exactly where joecivic says it is on a 318is. Drivers side just before the rear wheel. Its about the size of a coke can.
