    Some opinions of this.

    Couple things:

I've taken my motor out and torn it down to the shortblock to try to find my oil leak. My transmission and underbody are covered in an oily mess and I had to put in 1 quart every 3000 miles.

I thought it was coming from the front "bad" spot, but now I'm not sure...

    - The area right below the rear main seal (the bottom cover piece) is very clean. Also, my car didn't leave a drop of oil for the 4 months that it sat - so I REALLY don't think it's a rear main.
    - It's a pretty good mess around the front crackshaft point where the timing belt mounts - but I think this is normal?
    - I always thought I saw a mess coming from the front of the headgasket - but now I'm not sure.
    - I really can't find any trails anywhere else. My bellhousing is slightly oily, with a bit of residue - but I don't know if oil has seeped in there from above or what? I'm going to check the tranny fluid level, but I don't think it's gone down since I filled it up 30k ago.
    - Since I built my motor a few years ago, the whole underbody of my car, especially around the tranny, has gotten very coated in oil and grime. I hate this. :hitler:

    QUESTION:
    - how clean do the head and block mating surfaces need to be? I still see some marks left form the headgasket, but it feels smooth? What's the best way to clean this furhter, if I must?

    Reply asap. Thanks.

front crankshaft seal sounds like it is likey leaking. How is it normal to have a mess there unless you have a leak?

If you tore down that far, just get a top end and bottom end full set and replace everything.
