    Rear bearing install problem.

Ive been working on my rear bearings for about a day and a half now. I'm gonna try and explain the problem to the best of my knowledge, sry if I mess it up a little bit. I just used a slide hammer to pull the hub off. Well to my knowledge the bearings are pressed on. My old ones that I am trying to pull off are in 2 pieces. One which is stuck on my hub I think it is called the outer race. It is now stuck on my hub and i cant get it off, probably due to the fact that they are pressed on. Tell me what you guyz think, I'm learning as I go. Here are some pics to better explain the situation. Thank you guys for your time and input.

    Pics:

Sry about the text in the pics, should have made bigger and a different color.

Pic 1 says: "Is that apart of the old bearing? Outer Race Maybe?

Pic 2 says:Its Missing something cause i don't think those bearings are suppose to be exposed like that?

    Thanks again

That is the inner race that pulled away from the outside of the bearing. That is normal when pulling apart the hub to do this work. You should be able to pull that off of the hub with a big 3 prong gear puller.

The bearings are pressed into the trailing arm and a large C clip holds them into place along with the hub and axle nuts. The axles rotate inside the inner race of the wheel bearing.

So far fairly normal but I would get the axles out of the way and pull them before digging in any further. The C clip to remove the bearing is removed by the two holes located at the 4 and 5 o clock positions according to your picture above. Get a set of C clip pliers and squeeze the holes together along with prying from behind and outward on the clip to remove them.

Looking at that pic of the inner race stuck to the hub, it looks like you may have to cut it off with a dremel. I've seen two style hubs for the standard 4-lug e30's one where you can easily get a gear puller behind the race, and then the one like yours where it it s a bitch to get the race off.

Axle needs to come out. I used a bushing knocker (bearing driver) to get mine out from the inside of course.

Unbolt the axles from the diff and then press them out. You have to make room for them to come out by unbolting them and dropping the insides down to get them out.

If i'm putting them back on do i have to get them pressed back on. Or is there another method of getting the axles back on?

You have to have the bearings and hubs back into place. Put some anti seize on the splines of the axle and start the hub end first the best you can by hand. We used a 2x4 placed on the diff end of the axle and got the axle as straight as possible and hit the wood at the end of the axle until it seated all the way into the hub and then bolted the axle back up to the diff.

Make sure you put the C clips back into place to hold the bearings in before installing the hub.

I just realign the splines and tap it in enough for the nut to catch the threads and use it to draw the axle tight. Works for me........
