NO CRANK ( no not speed)

1989 325iX 5 spd BAttery good. Getting juice to juncton box up front- Tapped on starter while cranking...nothing- Got a push from my bro . Car started right up- drove home fine from train station. Came home. NO crank- I'm thinking ignition switch or starter. What wire from ignition switch goes to starter to engage? Is it the black and yellow wire? If so I can see if it's getting power when I turn ignition. If no juice then, I would think starter is dead. Guess I'll have to drive the other BMW... :)

Nope Car is good. I put motor in 6 years ago and no problems minus obvious aging stuff. I will check my schematic to see if starter has a relay. I think some e30's do.

I also have this problem after doing the 2.7I swap. My car fired up fine before I did the swap. Have yet to put a multimeter on it though.
Let me know what you find.

Sounds to me like you have a bad engine ground. It'll give these symptoms, all at once without warning. It's the one that runs from your oil pan to the frame. To test this, take one neg clamp of your jumper cables and clamp it on to your oil drain plug, Take the other neg clamp and clamp it on a well grounded location like a strut tower and then crank. If your car starts, then you need to replace the ground cable.

Checked for ground on my engine. Has ground, but I was thinking, I have left the ground from the engine battery tray to the valve cover off because my down pipe is in the way. Would this cause my car to not crank

No worries bro. Might help if you spell out what your problems are (Symptoms and testing done so far).
Gonna jump in on my iX Today. She is pissed at me cause I've been neglecting her with my M42. Will need to make her feel pretty again. Cars are just like bitches. You love them and you hate them sometimes.

So I got a look at the starter... Wire from solenoid to starter( the copper one that actually goes into the starter) rotted away. And it rotted so close to the starter I didn't have any way of splicing it. I did a temp hack and it started but it won't last. Time for a new starter after 240,000 miles..

checked out my starter with some tests.
                          its on my 86 eta.
Checked for power from battery, good about 12.4v.
checked for good ground at block. good.
checked the red wire to the positive post on the starter. doesnt seem to have any voltage. checked schematics, goes to the alternator. I'm assuming it feeds/receives voltage.
Checked signal wire from ignition switch. starts at 0 i think and when in start position goes up to 12.4v.
what could be wrong? or other tests I can do?

Check your fuseable link in the boot.
