    butyl needed for windshield install?

just installed my windshield this weekend...went to a body shop supply house to get a sealing putty for the sunroof tracks and the guy have of a roll of butyl intended for windshield use.
Should i have installed this stuff with the windshield gasket?

When i installed the windshield i just put the gasket in place and put the glass in. Did i do it wrong?

Nope. Just the gasket. No sealer needed on these.

Butyl tape is useless these days. It was used on older domestic cars in place of the original equipment sulfite adhesive.

High viscosity urethane is the recommended material for all non-gasket installations.

The e30 uses a gasket that's made from EPDM (synthetic rubber) so it doesn't need any kind of sealant. The gasket has drain holes in each corner to allow water to drain out.

        thanks guys.
i ended up using the butyl on the sunroof tracks that go into the back of the roof and clip in so they don't vibrate.
