Starter Rebuild Q (pic inside)

I am swapping my starter pinion to accommodate my new FW. Yet I can't get the pinion off. There is a keeper on the shaft to the left of the pinion. It spins in place but will not slide with force. The shaft appears to be notched where this keeper sits. Any input is appreciated.

take a socket that will slip over the end of the shaft but rest on that keeper, hammer the socket with a large hammer towards the pinion to pop it off the clip on the shaft, then pry the clip off the shaft. And slid the pinion off the end
