    What are these? (under steering column)

    So in order to get to the gauge cluster light that lights the left gauges (speedo/fuel), I had to remove the lower kick panel under the steering wheel, and I have some questions about whats under there

    Basically, what are all these things:

    i think this is the microphone for the car phone i have

    no idea what this thing is, its a little button and a red light cat-tied together and attached to the left side of the black box in pic #4

    no idea what this is either, also connected to the black box

    door gong? also what is that little button under the gas pedal, I never knew what the deal is with that

    i dont know what this box is or whats plugged into it but for some reason a bunch of the wires are cut

    this is the bulb i pulled out, it sayus 12v 3w and it also says M7 which im guessing is the bulb type. However, there were no wires coming out the back of the bulb, are there supposed to be or does it get power just by being in the socket?

    I have to replace this bulb so I'm also wondering what the bulb type is, im assuming its m7

    thanks in advance

    First pic - probably microphone like you said

    Second pic - looks like the valet switch and LED for a prior alarm install

    Third pic - fuse for said alarm

    Fourth pic - door gong

    Fifth pic - old alarm brain

    The light bulb gets power from the socket. Where do you plan on buying the bulb? You should just email them the picture and let them know what you need.

      The bulb is most likely a 194. Any auto parts store will have one.

        autozone told me i'd have to get the bulb at the dealer (socket is part# 62111376716, bulb is part# 07119978372), since the bulb does not detach from the socket that connects it to the board. However, realoem says there are supposed to be 3:

        Can someone else verify the prior alarm system thing? The cars been in the family for over 10 years and we never heard anything about something like that being installed, also there is no evidence of an alarm system other than this hardware. if it is indeed an alarm system, how does it work, like what does that red button/light do? and why would there be wires connected to it but cut?

          I don't know about an alarm, but it does look kinda like my keyless entry box.

            I do have a keyless entry system but I don't think this is it

            also what is the button thing under the gas pedal? do all e30s have that? i know it changes the rpm the car shifts at from like 4500 to like 5250 (autotragic)

              Important note here.

              That Bulb...Do NOT use a 5w instead of a 3w.

                I'm 100% sure it's an alarm/keyless entry box.

                That button is the kick-down button for the automatic transmission (makes the car shift later when you're passing cars/flooring it). Only automatics have that "feature".

                  Box in pic 5 is 100% for certain a keyless entry module.

                  Let me say this right now: your installer was a fucking HACK. Typical crap aftermarket ball of wires...and too damn lazy to install the LED or the programming switch. The wires are cut because they are not needed for your vehicle/feature set, but more of them could have been used had they cared at all about what they do to other peoples' cars.

                  I would (and have) fired anyone for such hackery, in an instant.

                    I have suck a button in my car. the red button, but next to it a switch that flips.
                    Mine's stuck right under the AC below the AC Controller.

                    Plus, how does this kick down feature work?

                        uh... the button look like the kill switch for the alarm...

                        which is usually mount low and under the dash.

                        get the bulb from the dealership ~ its only couple cents with cca.

                          the kick down 'feature' just changes the rpm the car will shift at. if you depress the gas pedal down to the button but not depressing the button (like 90%) then it will shift at around 4500rpm, but if you go WOT it will shift at 5250rpm

                          lol thanks for the warnings about the 3W bulb but i caught it right off the bat

                          about the alarm thing: I have the stellar keyless entry system sold on bavauto:

                          Stellar's new BMW45 keyless entry unit wires easily and reliably into your 1975-1991 BMW. Why pay over $300 for a factory alarm when all you want to do is simply lock and unlock your BMW by remote? Stellar's BMW45 offers all of the performance and reliability of a factory keyless entry system and more, at only a fraction of the cost.

                          The BMW 45 allows you to add flashing parking-light confirmation. This will assure you that your BMW has been securely locked.

                          Stellar's BMW45 allows you remotely lock and unlock your doors at a fraction of the factory price, and for added convenience the accessory button on your BMW45 will work in conjunction with other BMW compatible accessories for remote operation of features like power trunk, remote start, or power windows/convertible top.

                          * Remote Keyless Entry At A Fraction Of The Factory Price
                          * Extra Accessory Output
                          * Microprocessor Controlled
                          * Add Parking Light Or Starter Kill With One Relay!
                          * Made In The USA
                          * Limited Lifetime Warranty

                          In the pic it looks like there is a big bundle of wires, is it possible my mechanic (who installed the system after I gave up trying) just cut the wires to save space, and since they werent connected to anything? I'm still wondering about that little red button and red light....

                              Never send a mechanic to do an installers job...what a mess.

                              The LED flashes when the car is locked: just might fool the thieves into thinking you have an actual alarm instead of a keyless entry system...so it does nothing, basically.

                              Either way, it should be mounted on the dashboard somewhere...my vote is right below the cigarette lighter.

                              The switch is for changing system programming. Things like chirp length, light flash parameters, lock/unlock on ignition or programming new transmitters...apparently, you didn't read your manual, did you?
