every once in a while my tachometer will get stuck at 3k rpms. i smack the dash and it starts to work fine again. dunno what it is.

How would it get "gummed up" if it's in a sealed unit its entire life? It's not like a lot of dirt gets in there.
Have you ever had the cluster apart? If so, did you remove the gauge needles?
If not, maybe something in the tach's motor is bad. Try swapping your tach with one from a known working cluster.

You have a short circuit in the tach. Only way to fix is to replace with a good unit or to have it repaired at a speedometer shop, like Palo Alto Speedometer or North Hollywood Speedometer.Comment
