    eta flywheel question

A few weeks ago I read something about the early (84-85) model etas had a slightly lighter flywheel than the 86+. Is this correct? Since I am not switching over to motronic 1.3 yet, and I need to take my tranny out for some maintanence, I was thinking I would put this flywheel in for the time being. Supposedly the early etas were quicker than my car even with a 2.71 rear.

Ya both my 84 325e had the Single mass flywheel in them, The newer 325e have a Heavy dual mass flywheel. It's a direct swap with the appropiate clutch, pressure plate and what not.

I knew that you would have the answer, I was counting on your reply

So the clutch needs to be for the early flywheel then? Its cool how much you can swap stuff around, but there is so much to swap. May or may not do this yet since I dont need a clutch. Thanks for the info.

Yep the Dual mass and single mass use different clutch disks. So you'll need a clutch disk for what ever year the flywheel is from.

They switched to a dual mass in 5/86. Mine has a shaved down factory single mass flywheel from Metric Mechanic...only 12 lbs. 8) 5/86 is also when they switched to an aluminum shift console and other misc. things in that area.

hey beej, do you think it makes a difference in how the car picks up? Im not expecting anything special. But does the motor rev a bit faster and how smooth does it run?

With a lightened flywheel, definitely. The engine feel so much more responsive and revs up faster for quicker shifting.
