My interior lights don't work but least the light switch controls the tachometer :/

    Seriously.

When I got the car none of the interior lights worked apart from a slight glow from the boot filament. So looked and yes fuses 21, 19, 27 but not 6 were blown. Replaced these and still nothing.

So I replaced ALL the fuses and All the bulbs. No change. I sit and play with the interior light switch and now I notice that with the engine running, the light switch and door switch turn the tachometer on and off! Even with the engine off the speedo and tach jump about 1mm when you move the switch or open the door.

Everything else electrical works except for the check light reset button. The looms look in good condition, but there are the remains of sound system cabling and two separate alarms that have since been removed.

The cluster works otherwise apart from the fact I have not found redline, but I don't think its meant to start going round the gauge towards 1k again :/ It idles about right, and at 3k it sounds about right. I am going to try and check it at work with a laser tachometer.

I am at the end of my tether with this, and am really hoping there is a fix I cant find published anywhere else :/ All the auto electrical places I ring start breathing in through their teeth when I say the words "1989 BMW" Seems all they want to do these days is HID conversions and headunit installs :(

Any input is much appreciated before I die trying to read a map with a torch in my mouth.

1989 320i se oem central locking + power sunroof, OBC, no alarm.

While this might be crossed up wiring from one of the previous hack jobs, it could also be a bad ground connection under the dash.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
