I need help ASAP with removing this nylon cup. I've read you need to turn it CCW when your under the car 90 degrees, but can't get it to go farther than 45. Is there a trick to it? Do I just need to be more persistant? Let me know if you have any expience in this area.

Mine was fairly easy. I got a pair of long needle nose pliers, put the points on either side of the cup, pushed down (to get the pliers to stay), and turned.
Good luck.

Awesome, thanks for the tips guys. After I figured that out it only took like 5 min. 15 min total. I got the 1.9 and was afraid it wasn't gonna be enough of a change, but damn it feels good, just right.Comment

Honestly.Originally posted by kencopperwheatYou guys all wish you had the sheet-metal console 8)
My Z3 shifter was so much tighter in my old car. (86' 325e)
I'm going to try and rebuild the linkage next week while have the whole transmission and motor out.'91 318is

I'm actually swapping the old shifter into my 84 318i and totally rebuilding the metal console. I can't wait to see what I'm getting into.Comment

Has anyone ever had any luck replacing this with a ball bearing shifter carrier? I'm tempted to rip up the tunnel and weld in some metal to mount the UUC e36 ERK setup.
They make a great shifter (by far the most attractive to me) but I'm not going to keep that POS plastic cup in there, not to mention the bitch clip and the plastic o-rings.
Basically, I want a full rebuild on the shift linkage.Comment
