    steering wheel loose

i dunno what is going on with my steering wheel, but when i was on the highway tonite, going around 75 mph there was this hollow almost clunking that was very constant, if i pushed hard or pulled on the wheel the noise subsided a little, i was wondering if there is a bearing in the steering column or something that could wear out which would cause this play in the wheel, its almost like the column is vibrating in and out bumping against the wheel because that spring allows it too, i dunno whats oging on, but i know it is not that nut near the gas pedal cause i have f'ed with that and it doesnt help.

Are you sure it's the steering wheel? Maybe it's the inner or outer tie rod ends. It could also be a bad wheel bearing or rack.

it sounds like its coming right form the steering wheel, i just bought brand new tie rods and a guarenteed used e36 rack as well as a new knuckle, which has no play, after i swap all that in i guess would be a better time to see if the noise is still there.

If it's the ball joints you have to replace the whole arm (comes as a unit). I believe they're about $70 or $80 each.
