speedometer and cluster light not working

I bought an E30 about a month ago with bad odometer gears so I ordered new ones and put them in last night. Now the the speedometer and odometer are not working. The light that illuminates the left side of the cluster is also out. The tach, gas gauge, and temp gauge all work and the right side of the cluster lights up so what could cause the left light to go out along with the speedo and the odo? I had the cluster sitting out of the car for about two weeks, could this cause any problems?

Bad bulb, bad solder joints, or even a damaged main PCB are all possibilities for the dark left side. As to the speedometer, if it was working before you removed the cluster I'd first suspect a poor connection for the speed signal.
