Stomp Test?

OK, heres the deal.

I have an '88 325is, and lately I've had a CEL pretty constantly. Its got a build date of 9/87 so I have a 153 ecu as far as I know. From What I understand, the 173 is the only m20 ecu that has the stomp test function.

So my question is: Is there a way to check the light with out any special readers or tools?

Stomp test will work for the 88 325is

153 ecu won't work with the stomp test. 173, 525, 526, 380 and others will. If you have a 153 ecu the first thing I would do is replace it with one of the others. I personally prefer my 380 to the 173 that I have.

I have tried the stomp test, and no luck. Early '88's didn't get the 173, so I'll probably start looking for one.

Lordofthewaters: are all of those m20b25 ecus? I'm guessing the 380, 525, and 526 cam in e34's? Also, why do you prefer the 380 over the 173? What differences between them?

153 is motronic 1.1
173 351 380 382 524 525 526 are all motronic 1.3 and all were used in e30 from 87-91 so only the 525 and 173 were also used in the e34's.

I prefer the 380 as it seems to idle smoother and a bit lower and seems to run a bit more even when under load. But that is just comparing MY 380 to my 525 and 173.
