Correct me if I'm wrong, but all e's redline at 5, while I's redline at 7. I think that may be the only difference?

Yes, the tach is different, but the rest should be the same.

A little tip. The way to tell if one cluster is compatible with another is to look at the service indicator lights. One type has 3 red lights, the other has 1 red light. As long as two clusters have the same number of lights, they can swap parts. It doesn't matter if they are Motometer or VDO.

I am pretty sure either cluster will work in any car, meaning you can swap a 3 light cluster into a 1 light car or visa versa.

so the 'es' cluster will show a redline from 5000 to 7600 and the 'is' cluster will show redline form 7000 to 7600?

(i dont have my car at my place at the moment so I cant go and look...mine is an 'is')

Nope, the E tach only goes to 5k it has a 4500rpm redline. You can swap the faceplates though. Just change the coding plug.

If the 7k tach works, just swap it into the the es cluster, and be sure to use the is coding plug and you'll be set.
