Whats the difference ZF and getrag Trannies

Is one for the E30 and one for E36?? And what are the sport trans that Ihear people talking about, Where R is where first normally is and 1st where second usually is. What car did those come from????

The reverse is the same on every e30 I've ever seen. The "sport" trans is the electronic auto. All autos are ZF transmissions. There were some manual e30's that came with a ZF manual also ZFS5-16, Most 5 speed e30's had a Getrag 240 for 318s or a 260 for 325/e/i/is.

I don't know if any E30's were shipped to the US with the "dogleg" 4-speed close ratio transmission, but they were available in Europe.

Difference is manufacturer. ZF and Getrag are tranny manufacturers. Dogleg tranny (sport) was a five speed getrag 265cr standard on all euro e30 m3's and an option on some N/a e24 6ers and also e12 5ers I believe. Sport tranny is just a term for not being an overdrive tranny. On most N/A model tranny's, 4th gear is a 1-1 ratio and 5th is an overdrive gear. On the sport tranny 5th is the 1-1 gear and their is no overdrive gear.

See I am in Germany that is why I hear of the Sport tranny a lot. Now that is one more thing that I can look for in the junkyard. There is an older 3 or 5 series there now. It is stamped on the bottom right?

Should be on an aluminium tab on the diff.

If it is a dogleg tranny it is a sport/close ratio tranny. They only came dogleg.

So I just found a Getrag 265 with 170,000 KM about 100,000, Thats what it says for about $220 (converted) shipped. Worth it?

Well they also came on the 328s but not sure, I think they have a shorter throw, I know that my friend who swapped to a ZF in his 325 has problems with his shifter popping out of 2nd and 4th because his stock shifter is too long.
