I searched M50 and flywheel but that came up with lots of pages of results. I was wondering if I have a 1992 M50 with transmission from the same car can I use a M20 clutch/flywheel? I have heard that the M50 uses a dual mass flywheel and would like to use a much lighter clutch/flywheel combo. Anyone know?

I was under the impression that the m20 cluch and flywheel worked in the swap, but I'd like to hear that confirmed by somebody who has actually done it.'91 318is

It works with the m20 tranny, however, I'm not sure if it will work with the m50 tranny as the getrag 260 pressure plate tabs may not match the getrag 250 input shaft
The clutch/flywheel combo is more dependent on the tranny than the motor

Any cheap lightweight flywheel options for the M50 that anyone knows about? Aside from getting a aluminum one from BMP design or similar company.Comment

from what i recall you can use the flywheel and starter from an m20, its about 10 pounds lighter.

You can have the M20 flywheel shaved to save even more weight. There are several people on the board who have done this, including myself. I had mine shaved for my 24v swap and haven't had any problems so far. It was originally 19 lbs. and I had it shaved to 12 lbs. That was as far as I was comfortable taking it given how I was going to use it.Comment
