    Replace Motometer Cluster with VDO

Can I replace my Motometer Cluster on my 02/87 325e (5k rpm) with VDO (7k rpm) from an 89 325i completely? Not just interchanging parts...but replacing the whole cluster? Will it work?

    Thank you.

Yes but the tach WILL NOT read accurately. For that you'll want to pull your old coding plug and use it in the newer cluster, and sometimes it still isn't accurate.

It can be done, but make sure you have the correct tach. The early model VDO/Moto tachs were were larger than later model units. I'm not sure exactly when this change occured, but if you buy one on here, make sure and ask the seller for pictures.

So is this how they federalized cars with a Euro cluster? Put in a NA speedo and coding plug?

I will b replacing my complete motometer cluster with 5k rpm on my ETA as a whole with VDO 7k rpm from 89 325is. Will it work after switchng the coding plug?

It should. On my car (a 9/87 production date) I have the late model tach, so that's really the only thing you need to look out for. Currently, I have both early and late model tachos, so I'll post up some pictures so you can see the size differences.

To answer your question, yes, it will work after swapping in the coding plug.
