any e30 diff will work, but do you have a 84-85 318i or a newer 318is?

the 84-85 have a 3.91 LSD and the only thing lower would be a 4.10 or 4.27 and those things are rather costly.

I do not know about the newer 318is cars.

By the way I have a 3.73 LSD Large case and a 3.91 LSD small case for sell

        It's a newer one
        M40 powered ;)

EDIT : Your car is probably equipped with an 4.45 or an 4.27 open diff

well i must admit its quick for a 1.8i
i was giving it a blast the other day (i was on the track if police ask) i managed to get upto 125mph but that was really pushing the engine it would probably top out at 130
if i put a 325i diff on it would that make a difference in top end ??
          cheers

            What do you want ?

            Quick acceleration --> lower top
            or
            slow acceleration --> higher top

            I'm confused

actually I'm pretty certian it's a 4.10 open... 4.27 are only on 318ic and the 4.45 is on the E36 318ti which will fit btw.

maybe try something with a 324TurboDiesel diff (3.25)
but it'll hard to find there in the UK i guess

                  or an early E30 323i 83-84 (3.23)

some guy has told me that the Euro spec eta till 9/1985 was equipped with an 2.79

                  correct me if I'm wrong

but your M40 hasn't enough power to reach high top ends with the eta one

keep in mind it's an euro spec 316i ;)
it's pretty much different as a US spec

I've heard the 4.45 was installed in the late E30 316i

is there any way i can tell what diff is installed by looking at it i have the use of a ramp so that aint a problem

off topic i heard a while ago on another forum that you can change the throttle body the air intake and injectors from a bigger e30 like 325i or 320i into a 318i is this true and what difference will it make ?

also off topic would it be easier to change the engine from a 325i or 320i into my 318i if so what do i need to swap engine diff tank ecu ????
                      cheers

there is on the left or the right side a tag with some stamped numbers like 410

I think you've heard about to swap by an 325i car the afm by an 535i afm

for an M20 swap you'll need : 6 banger drivetrain, wiring harness, rear disc brakes and of course the ECU and another things that i forget

                            don't forget power cost money

the easiest way is to buy a chip
or do an M42 swap ( DOHC 16v i4 engine)
                            and you've a high MPG too :P

ps are you from the New Brunswick area ?

mine must be the m42 318is as it does 125mph 130 if pushed hard in my book it say the m40 will only do 117mph
you said a 16v engine from what year and model as we might have one
                              no i`m from the uk
