    Wavering Idle, 318i

I have a 1985 318i, and it idles fine for awhile at around 1050 RPM, then it will drop down suddenly to 850 RPM and rev up to around 1600 RPM, then back to 1050. It will do this very randomly and all within about a second or two. Any ideas on what to look for?

Have you cleaned your ICV lately?

I have an 84 and it doesn't idle that steady either... I have it tuned it right at 1000rpm for the idle and it's pretty steady there, but if I try to do it at 750 or so it'll go up and down like yours.

ICV = Idle Control Valve. Controls how much air goes around the throttle plate into the engine. Sounds like you need a new one.

Do you have a Bentley Manual? If not, I would highly suggest one. They are really informative and worth every penny.

I don't know specifically on a 318i, but I would assume that it would be attatched to the intake elbow (bellow) and to the throttle body, and would have a connection.

Here's a picture of the part in BavAuto

$174.95 (Under the hood --> Fuel System --> Fuel Injection System)

I cleaned the ICV about 2 weeks before I sold you the car, I never had the idle flucuate just idle high When I cleaned it the first time the idle dropped. But the second time it did nothing. So I'd recomend replacing the valve. A used one can be found for $30.
