what to look for when buying m42 powered e30

alright my mom needs a dd so im looking at some 318is. what's the first thing you would do if you dont know the history of the car? example: 325is = timing belt. i know m42's have timing chains, should i change that?

    Okay...first

    BODY
I would start with the body. Does it have rust? Are there doors/hood/trunklid.
    1) if there is rust and its big...say no. If its a small bit of rust and you think it can be replaced go to other
    2) If the answer is no, go straight to Other

    OTHER
    You made it to other...awesome.
This part involves brakes, steering, wheels/tires.
Does it have brakes? Does it have wheels? Does it have steering pieces...and actually steers when you are in the car?
    1) If you answered any of these questions as NO, say NO to the car. Unless brakes, if brakes go to 3
2)If you answered all the questions as YES go to MOTOR
3)If you have all questions answered YES but brakes. Get into see whats really wrong with them. If over $400 worth of work say no.

    MOTOR
Wow, you made it this far. Amazing, this car is really looking up.
    1) Does it have a motor?
    -Yes move to 2
    -No, move to another car
-maybe but I can't get the hood open nor will it start, I usually use gasoline and a match to get the hood open in this case..works better then windex by far.

    2)Does the motor run?
-Yes purs like a kitten, buy car after a mechanic inspects it
-Yes but its really noisy, could be the timing chain (yea for these) and might need a new tightener (or whatever the are called), get a new one and see if it helps, if not get away and sell tightener on R3V. If yes, continue to buy car.
-Yes but there are flames coming out of every where and it sounds like there are a million and a half marbles inside...somtimes these rotary motors mess up. Say no to the car and move on. Watch your face though, marbles w/ flames can be an instant killer.
-Nope but cranks over, this could be many things. Have it inspected and see if you can do the job yourself. If so proceed to buy the car after verifying you can fix it without spend more then the car is worth.
-Nope...why does it smell like I just cooked 40lbs of noodles with no water in the microwave under here. Its time to move on.

**if any of your responses ended in a positive outcome please go to the next optional section for further things.

    Driving:
you're going to buy a car. Congrats...and its for your mom..she's going to LOVE a 20 year old car that makes her look badass as the rest of us. Maybe she can come to a meet or two and hangout with whatever her firefighter nutsacks name was. Dont let her get to close though..she might show you mom her penis.

    1) does it drive?
-yep, like a dream..seems like its new...BUY IT
-Yep, seems to have some clunking in the back. make sure body isn't cracked, replace shock mounts.
-Yep but why do I start out with 4 wheels/tires/axles ect. and end up with only 2? Collect pieces, run to your car, sell on R3V look for other vehicle.
-No but its because there is a safety issue that can easily be dealt with, buy it.
-No because its on cinder blocks in the middle of an abandoned parking lot..hmm..get coke out of trunk...run.
-No because it doesn't have a motor and brakes, steering.. You went to far on the list bud..go back to the top.

--sorry for the mostly useful post, was fun making it though. There are somethings in there that you should look for.
