Question about my car, tranny and such

Got a 1991 325i was a automatic now a stick. The linkage part (the bar on top with the hole that helps just guides) broke. I was wonderng if I need a heat sheild? The console gets hot to the touch and the enigne is overheating? If so what kind? I am alos replacing the thermostat, what do I get? Anytihng else I should get when I am at the junkyard?

you got oil in your trans? dumb question but my car did not have a heat shield, nor did the trans ever get hot.

Since some one swap auto to manual maybe that was just one of the "little" things they left out.

Yea it has oil. But I will also do a radiator flush and get a new temp.
