Going to see a 325ix this weekend, What to look for???

    Hey guys

so I'm going to look at an '89 325ix this weekend... hoping it's in good shape, if it is, it'll get scooped for the winter..

My question is what should I be looking at on the 325ix...?
Transfer case? What are things that are ix specific that should be checked to make sure I don't have to dump money in the near future? Other things non specific to ix's that should get checked?

    This is the photo..
    it is described as:
"1989 325ix - automatic - equipped - sunroof - leather interior - aftermarket cd player - momo wood steering wheel - very good condition - 257 000 km (not miles) rebuilt motor and tranny 25 000 kms ago - bilstein suspension - 4 toyo winter tires, almost new - yada yada yada......

Hopefully everything is as is stated in the description - I am somewhat skeptical.. he wants $3000.

So, I am thinking that there are probably bilstein shocks....in the rear...or something, not "bilstein suspension"..etc...
What else should I be looking at?
Especially on the "rebuilt motor and tranny" ?

    Thanks a lot guys
I want this car to be what he says it is!

make sure there are receipts for maintenance work done. Listen for diff whine during the test drive. check the oil to make sure its not milk-shakeing (coolant/oil mixing due to head gasket). look underneath for obvious leaks. Feel the clutch, if it has a very high engagement point it will need to be replaced soon. Check for smoke from the tail pipe when its cold. vibrations or poping when turning at full lock (front half shafts)
Someone else take over. there is so much to look for.

The paint appears to be really nice.

I'd check to make sure it has been in any accidents. Make sure the windows and other parts have BMW markings on them. Look down the body lines for any inconsistencies. Do a carfax on it of course.

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

Would the clutch thing still be valid if the car's automatic ?

Also, what's the deal with the smoke.. don't most cars smoke a bit in the cold?

Anything that gets worn in the IX specificly? Like the transfer case? etc?

        Thanks guys

            also.. about carfax..?
when you use it, to you register as a 'member' once you pay the $35 or wtv?

if so, are any of you members? can you run a VIN for me?
            Is that wrong? lol

keep the help coming, very appreciated...

Look for rust under the body kit, on the strut tower, on the bumper mounting points. have him floor it when it's warm and see if it smokes, look for smooth shifts, listen for whine, check windshield for leaks, see if it smells wet inside of the car...

You would be checking for blow-by. Sometimes you get condensation that naturally occurs from the exhaust during a cold start but if you smell oil or gasoline through the exhaust, that is something to consider.

And what Jparkr is saying is that to check this when it's cold...meaning that the CAR is cold.. (not the weather) I'd be skeptical of a used car that was already warmed up when I got there to see it. Cold starting a used car is one of the best tests that you can do.

Pretty sure he's going to meet me at my garage, so the car will have already warmed up..

Maybe I'll get them to check my car out first, and let his sit, and "cool off" hehe

Then I can run that test

                  Thanks

                    help help help

                    hey guys

so i checked the car.. its a little rough aesthetically in some parts but seems pretty good overall. I'll get it fully checked over this coming saturday.

1 thing though, I suspect a leaky rack... I'll have to see. Are the steering rack ix specific?

I got the VIN, anyone have anyway of checking the cars history short of me coughing up $35 on carfax??

I'm going it checks out at the garage and on its VIN history... if so, should be a fun winter.
