I have been having some problems with my 1988 325is. I went to pick up my buddy Halston yesterday so we could go to pull apart in Buford. On the way there the car was cutting out to the point it hurt my neck. I get out and let Halston drive, we hit the highway and mash it through all the gears. It ran like a Bat outa hell, but at other times it would start its cutting out again. After Pull apart, I drop Halston off at his house. It does its little cutting out thing every once and awhile. After I drop Halston off the cutting out becomes serous. It would cut out so bad it would die and the come back to life. At a red light it started idling weird kinda like a big block V8 with cams in it.
Next thing I know it dies, I try starting it back up no start. Finally, right when the light turns green it fires back up and it slowly goes through the gear cutting out here and there. I stop at a gas station to get gas, after I get gas I try starting up. It wouldn't start, it would turn but not start. The guy I had bought the car from put bav auto wires and plugs. I think he may have gotten the wrong ones because the wires didn't fit on the plug at all. They could move around loosely and come off very easy. I went and got new plugs and some wires from my old Alpine that I knew worked. I set the gap on the plugs at .28. I installed the plugs and wires in the correct firing order and tried starting, but no start.
I had a guy come and help me with a Bentley book. We had no success, He told me that sometimes it could be the crank senor. He also said he had never had one go out on him while driving. The car will just not start and the crank sensor is the problem. We also took the back seat out to see if the Fuel Pump was working. I turned the key to the #2 position and he said he could hear it but it was very quiet and he had never heard one that quiet before. I had to leave the E30 at a Gas station Last night. The next morning I came up and switched the coil on it. The car did'nt start up at first, but on the second try it fired up. There was not that gassy smell coming from the exhaust anymore. It did not have that cutting out idle sound.
I start heading for home when it starts cutting out again. Not as bad as before but a little cut here and there. By the time I was 5mi. from my house it was completely cutting out and then just cutting back on again. I was loosing power bad, By the time I got to my house it was dead. Then I changed my crank sensor and started her up. The idle was great at the beginning after a min of running she started cutting out again and now it dies while idleing. I've tried everything, Is there anyone that has had this same problem that could help me out? Or anyone with any information?
I appreciate it guys. Sorry for any spelling errors.
