Short Shift for sheet metal console

sorry to post another short shift thread but i can find what i need anywhere.....do the Z4 3.0 and Z3 M levers work on a sheet metal shift console?

i was leaning towards the Z3 M for my application as the distance above the ball is longer, bringing it closer to the steering wheel, and the distance below the ball is longer too. or is the z4 better?

again sorry for a topic thats been covered before

I have the Z4 3.0 lever in my 84 318i and in order to get it high enough to clear the driveshaft you'll have to buy another one of those plastic rings that goes around the bottom of the fulcrum (ball). Just stack one right on top of the other and you should clear the driveshaft by 1/8"-1/4". I have no harmonic balancer on my driveshaft either; if you have one you'll have to remove it.

You can also bend the selector rod to clear it, which is what I did. This also brings the shifter a little closer to you.

Doesn't bending the rod make the throw longer? It seems like you'd be effectively shortening the length between the fulcrum and the connector?

Throw will be the same as long as nothing on the shifter is modified. You could put a 10 foot long selector rod in there and if the shifter is the same, throw will be the same. :)
