What is checks out? You know you're getting spark? You've pulled a plug and seen it spark?

no spark i checked the coil with ohm meter and seems to be in check i also tried jumping a wire from positive side of battery to the hot side of the coil and still nothing could it be the ecu

everybody always wants to go and blame the ecu right away. the fact is they seldom fail. you've got alot of troubleshooting to do before you get anywhere near isolating the ecu. you need to give more info first of all

        ie. is the engine cranking?

        are you getting fuel?

i would check first for a loose or broken connection at the crank sensor then if that doesn't work check if your main relay is working

The engine does crank fine. I do believe that I am getting fuel but I will check again tomorrow. What would the crank sensor have to do not getting spark out of the coil though? And where is this main relay? Maybe it shit the bed but I don't know where it is. Do relays just go out of the blue?

          Thanks

What was the LAST thing you worked on?

checked fuel today and that works fine i seem to have no power going to the coil the little green wire is definately not getting power it seams to becomeing from the ecu what do you guys think

the ecu gets its signal for tdc from the crank sensor it uses it for ignition timing. if theres no signal from the crank sensor the ecu wont energize the coil the main relay powers the cps somehow. well thats how it looks on the etm i didnt read it that closely and i dont have it with me now to look again... so i may be at least partially full of shit. hope this helps somehow though.

do you have a bently and electrical troubleshooting manual?
e30tech has a thread in the faq/diy about etm's in .pdf format i dunno if the links stil work but its a must have

                  Holy shit dude...

The ECU uses the signal from the CPS to turn the coil on/off. The power signal to the coil cannot be read with your $20 voltmeter, it cycles on/off too fast. And just because the coil's resistnce checks out, doesn't mean it can provide a spark. And yes, relays can go bad overnight.

so what does the main relay do for the cps then?

the main relay turns on the DME, iirc

:pwell you guys you were right . i took off the sensor and the wires were intact but not that well so i cut the wires then cleaned out all the factory epoxy then cut the hard plastic sheathing off to expose the little wire inside the sensor i then sodered on new wire extensions to the sensor and tried it out it works great and i saved about $120 dollars for a new one thanks again guys for your help:up:
