    e39 2.8ltr engine

hey i just found an e39 2.8ltr engine for sale for $300au. Dude says its leaking from the stem seals. Doesnt know what model of engine it is. Im capable of rebuilding it at home. Just wondering does anyone know what model the e39 528i had? ive done some searching and it varies from m52-m50 just need a confirmation cause im thinking of buying it and rebuilding it for my e30 daily :)

any ideas what could be causing the valve stems to leak? ie i know obviously valve stem seals but could there be any other cause then age to make the seal fail?

if its been sitting for a while the seal can dry out, or maybe if the owner ran cheapo/inproper oil

burning oil? likely the cyclonic oil seaprator under the intake, usually makes it run like ass due to the huge vacuum leak when it blows too, is it single vanos or dual, aluminum block or iron?, a iron block/single vanos is essentially a 2.8 m50 and can be dressed as such with the much better m50 intake, it may only have a single temp sensor hole in the head but the boss will be there to drill and tap for a second sensor if using m50 managment, the mount for the crank sensor is usually on the front cover even when it doesn't have a toothed balancer (m52 and newer runs off a trigger wheel on the crank by the starter through the block)

double vanos engines run a shitty designed intake with a even worse cyclonic valve design and have a different intake port design that you can't use the m50 intake with, they also run either a full or partially electric throttle body
